Pier Francesco Guarguaglini is Chairman and CEO of Finmeccanica (41,000 employees and a consolidated turnover of 6.8 billion Euros in 2001). The group, which is quoted on the Milan Stock Exchange, operates in the following sectors: aeronautics, space, helicopters, defense, transportation, energy, and information technology. Finmeccanica is also a major shareholder of STMicroelectronics N.V. (18.3% of shares), the third largest group in the microelectronics sector.

Mr. Guarguaglini began his professional experience in 1961 as an assistant lecturer in nuclear electronics at the University of Pisa and then from 1963 to 1978 as assistant lecturer in radar systems at the University of Rome.

During this time, he began working for SELENIA, holding various positions:

1963-1970: Systems Analyst
1970-1974: Director of Research Development
1975-Sept.1979: Director of the IT and Telecommunications Division
Oct. 1979-March 1981: Director and Manager of Civil Division
Apr. 1981-March 1982: Deputy General Manager
Apr. 1982-Nov.1982: Co-General Manager

In February 1984, he moved to OFFICINE GALILEO where he was General Manager until June 1987 and then Managing Director until 1994.

From February 1994 to September 1996 he was Managing Director of OTO MELARA SpA and BREDA MECCANICA BRESCIANA SpA.

From September 1996 to April 1999 was Head of FINMECCANICA DEFENSE SECTOR BUSINESSES.

From 1 December 1998 to September 2000 was Chairman of the Board of Directors of ALENIA MARCONI SYSTEMS NV (a joint venture between Finmeccanica and BAE).

From May 1999 to April 2002 was Managing Director of FINCANTIERI NAVALI SpA.

He is currently a member of IJVC HORIZON LTD's Shareholders' Steering Committee as well as the US Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers  (IEEE).

Born in Castagneto Carducci (Livorno) on February 1937, Pier Francesco Guarguaglini went on to graduate in Electronic Engineering from the University of Pisa and later got his PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania. He is currently a tenured lecturer at the University of Rome where he lives with his wife and three children.
